The Dalai Lama on healthy and unhealthy mental states

"I believe that happiness can be achieved through training the mind... Generally speaking, one begins by identifying those factors which lead to happiness and those factors which lead to suffering. Having done this, one then sets about gradually eliminating those factors which lead to suffering and cultivating those which lead to happiness."

Buddhism believes that there are positive or healthy mental states and negative or unhealthy mental states. One needs to recognize these mental states. Mindfulness is the tool here, used to observe our mental states. Positive mental states lead to positive emotions and a healthy psychology.

Every negative emotion has a corresponding positive emotion. Only one of them can exist - positive or negative. Anger is alleviated by kindness. Pride by humility.

Creating mindfulness helps us explore how much we are in positive states and how much in negative states. Healthy states lead to happiness and unhealthy states lead to suffering.

Very simple..
